Creating a nice display is easy, enjoyable, quick and affordable…You can find many inspirations in nature, magazines, online or in foreign countries. I love to decorate our house in different styles for every season and this Easter I have used some simple and traditional inspiration from Europe.
Difficulty: EASY
Create a Wow factor with feathers
A big thing in Sweden, is to decorate trees and vases with colourful, bright neon feathers. They give your kitchen a beautiful, fresh style and in combination with eggs and ornaments they look Wow! Cut a few branches from your garden or woodland, add some ribbons and eggs. The feathers can be bought online (Ebay) for a couple of pounds. Don’t worry, you can bug fake feathers, so no happy chickens are harmed.
Invest in a glass dome
I adore my glass dome with LED lights for creating seasonal displays (bought it for about £15 one year ago). You can do so much with the little space and the result is fantastic. I use it all year around (will be posting more inspirations), not just for special occasions like Christmas or Easter. For this one I inserted some mini chocolate eggs into a small ceramic bowl and added a hen plus some mini chicks (you can buy these everywhere). The last touch - a few feathers and a butterfly sitting on the top of the glass – done!
Add a little bit of green
Green is a symbol of spring. You can grow your own grass on the window sill or just buy a small pot of chives. Put it into a nice planter, add a few yellow mini chicks and your next display is ready!
In the Czech Republic, Slovakia and some parts of Hungary, there is a tradition of whipping and splashing girls with water on Easter Monday (especially in vilages). Boys visit families' and neighbour's houses and spank girls with a handmade whip plaited from a birch tree, decorated with ribbons. After the ceremony, girls feed their guests with traditional food, cakes, drinks and the visitors also receive money. Crazy tradition, isn’t it? I plated a whip in Slovakia on my last visit and it is already waiting for Easter Monday hanging as a decoration on the kitchen window.
