Bring old Suitcase back to life

If you are looking for the perfect coffee table that will make a statement in your living room look no further! An old, rustic suitcase can be the secret to this and will transfer your space into a designer room. That is not it! The table is also a great storage place for our board games. We can easily remove the glass, open it and entertain our visitors.

Steve was lucky to inherit one of the large sturdy old-fashioned looking suitcases from his grandfather who travelled the world. Inherit – I mean it sat in the loft for 30 years collecting dust until we decided to bring it back to life. Let’s see how!

Difficulty: MEDIUM

Before

After

Tools required: Saw, Hammer, Drill, Nails, Tape measure

Shopping list:

  • 4 heavy duty rubber swivel castor wheels @ £22 (4-pack)
  • Large piece of hardwood plywood (approx. £12 per M2)
  • Bespoke glass top £66

To do list:

  1. Get a suitcase.
  2. Decide on a height, which will fit your living room sofa or chairs
  3. Attach the plywood to the table. We used two sheets to get the correct height.
  4. Apply the wheels. We went for 75mm wheels instead or 50mm which were £12 more expensive. Having wheels attached you can move easily move the table and rubber wheels will protect the floor.
  5. If you want a glass on the top order a bespoke glass top. I would recommend it as it keeps the top flat, clean and save for glasses, plates, etc… Your local glass company will be happy to assist. I ordered 6mm thick toughened glass 900mm x 520mm with polished edges radius corners and it was ready within one week.

Tip:

  • If you don’t own a suitcase and really want one, they can be easily picked up for a bargain in your local second-hand furniture centre, car-boot sale or Ebay.
  • Make sure you apply small silicone protectors on the suitcase before you put a glass on the top.
